Portable bridge families and identifying details
The provider needs the actual product identity and manufacturer-rated intended use, not a conclusion based on appearance. Cincinnati facilities may use these terms inconsistently, so photographs and tag wording are more useful than a nickname.

What the federal dockboard rule requires
29 CFR 1910.26 requires dockboards to be capable of supporting the maximum intended load, secured in position, and provided with measures addressing vehicle movement. Portable dockboards must have handholds or another effective means for safe handling. These are employer responsibilities; this site does not approve a board, calculate a load, or determine whether a particular operating setup satisfies the rule.
For dockboards first placed in service on or after January 17, 2017, the rule requires run-off protection. It includes an exception where the employer demonstrates that run-off protection is not feasible or creates a greater hazard. The particular board's initial-service date matters. A board placed in service earlier is not exempt from the rule's other requirements, and the provider can ask for purchasing, inventory, or manufacturer records when the date is unclear.
Product name does not establish intended use
A facility may call every movable bridge a dock plate, while a manufacturer distinguishes plates from boards by construction and intended traffic. No universal conclusion follows from steel versus aluminum, the presence of curbs, or the nickname used at the receiving desk. Read the tag and provide photographs of the top, underside, edges, legs, and handling features.
The employer establishes the maximum intended load and uses equipment with an appropriate manufacturer rating. This site supplies no selection formula and no rating inference. If the tag and records cannot establish the rating, that uncertainty is itself part of the provider's repair-versus-replace assessment.
Why "bend it back" is not a repair scope
A bend is evidence that the product has yielded or that an attachment or structural member may have moved. Straightening the visible area does not by itself restore the original material condition, geometry, weld integrity, or documented rating. The same caution applies to welding a crack, replacing a curb, or adding a homemade handle.
A qualified provider assesses whether a manufacturer-supported repair path exists and whether the rating can be documented afterward. If that cannot be established, replacement may be the responsible written recommendation. Staff should not load-test, jump on, drive over, heat, straighten, or weld the equipment to see whether it still works.
Repair versus replacement
Replaceable handling hardware may make a limited repair practical when the surrounding structure is sound and compatible parts are available. Broad deformation, structural cracking, substantial corrosion, undocumented prior alterations, or missing identification can shift the decision toward replacement. Availability and lead time also matter when a facility needs an appropriately rated product for a specific loading pattern.
The accepting provider makes the recommendation after assessment and puts the proposed work, exclusions, documentation, and price in writing. The facility then decides whether to approve it. This website does not inspect the board or direct the work.
Vehicle movement and the loading position
Section 1910.26(d) requires measures to prevent transport vehicles from moving while dockboards are in position; the regulation gives wheel chocks and sand shoes as examples. The responsible employer determines the procedure for its operation. A damaged bridge or uncertain securing feature should be reported and the position paused rather than tested with traffic.
How a request moves
Describe the product, tag wording, visible condition, normal traffic, and location. A provider confirms whether the request fits its territory, equipment capability, documentation requirements, and availability, then states any assessment charge. After seeing the equipment and records, the provider supplies a written repair or replacement scope and pricing. Work proceeds only after facility approval, and the resulting documentation should identify what was assessed, changed, and left unresolved.

What is the difference between a dock plate and a dock board?
Both are portable products that bridge a dock-to-vehicle gap, but manufacturers distinguish their construction and rated intended uses. Facilities often use the names loosely. The word "plate," the metal type, or appearance alone does not establish permissible traffic or forklift suitability. Can a bent dock plate be repaired?
