Equipment terms in plain language

Plain descriptions so the call goes faster. None of these state a capacity, a service interval, or a price; those come from the data tag, the manufacturer's instructions, and the provider's written scope.

Dock leveler
The hinged steel deck installed at a dock position that bridges the gap between the warehouse floor and a trailer bed. Pit-mounted units sit in a concrete recess; edge-of-dock units bolt to the dock face instead. It is often the piece a caller means by "the dock is broken."
Lip
The hinged plate at the front edge of a leveler deck that extends onto the trailer bed and folds back when the deck is stored. A lip that will not extend or fold is a typical leveler report.
Hydraulic, mechanical, air-powered, vertical-storing, and edge-of-dock levelers
Five leveler families named for how the deck is raised and where it lives. Hydraulic units use a pump and cylinders, mechanical units use springs and a hold-down released by a pull chain, air-powered units use an inflating bag, vertical-storing units park upright behind the door, and edge-of-dock units mount on the dock face without a pit.
Dock plate, dock board, and bridge plate
Portable ramps placed between the dock and a trailer or between two surfaces. "Dock plate" and "dock board" are often used loosely; what matters is the product's manufacturer rating and intended use, which is why a missing capacity tag is a problem rather than a detail.
Run-off protection
Raised edges or other means on a dockboard intended to keep transfer vehicles from running off the side. OSHA's dockboard rule addresses it for boards first placed in service on or after January 17, 2017, with an employer-demonstrated exception described in the standard.
Vehicle restraint
Equipment at the dock face or on the drive that engages a trailer's rear-impact guard or wheels to reduce the chance of the trailer moving away during loading. Rotating-hook, vertical-barrier, and wheel-based designs are all common.
Dock lock
A widely used trade name that has become shorthand for a vehicle restraint. On a call, either word is understood; the provider will ask what the unit looks like and how it is controlled.
Communication light
The red and green light package that shows the driver outside and the operator inside what state the installed restraint system is reporting — engaged or released. The lights report system status; they do not by themselves establish that loading is safe. Mismatched or dark lights are a reportable symptom, not something to work around.
Interlock
A control relationship that keeps one piece of equipment from operating until another is in the right state — for example, a door that will not open until the restraint is engaged. Whether an interlock exists depends on what was installed, and the provider explains what is there.
Dock seal and dock shelter
Two different ways to close the gap around a trailer at the wall. A seal is a set of foam pads the trailer compresses against; a shelter is a rigid or flexible frame with curtains the trailer enters. Which one a position has affects both the symptom and the repair.
Head curtain
The flexible top member of a seal or shelter that drops down to close the gap above the trailer roof. It takes impact from tall trailers and wears accordingly.
Side pad
The vertical pads on either side of a dock seal that the trailer compresses. Torn wear pleats and crushed foam on the side pads are what a "the seal is shot" call usually describes.
Bumper
The laminated rubber, molded, or steel-faced block on the dock face that absorbs trailer impact before it reaches the building, leveler, or seal. Missing or delaminated bumpers expose everything behind them.
Projection
How far a bumper, seal, or shelter stands out from the wall. Projection determines whether the trailer reaches the seal correctly and whether the leveler lip can land on the bed, which is why it is measured on site.
Dock face and curb angle
The dock face is the vertical concrete surface trailers back up to; the curb angle is the steel edge protecting the top corner of that face and the leveler pit. Damage to either is building work, often a separate trade from equipment repair.
Sectional door
An overhead door made of hinged horizontal panels that ride on vertical tracks and then curve back along horizontal tracks under the ceiling. It is the common loading-dock door type and is distinct from a rolling steel door.
Insulated door
A sectional door with panels built around an insulating core, common at cold-storage and climate-controlled openings. Repair choices are similar to any sectional door, though panel matching matters more.
Rolling steel door
A door made of interlocking metal slats that coil onto a barrel above the opening rather than traveling back under the ceiling. Used where headroom is tight, security matters, or the opening is rated.
Sheet door
A lighter roll-up door made from a single corrugated sheet rather than individual slats. Common on smaller service openings and self-storage style bays.
Rolling fire door
A rolling steel door assembly that is labeled and installed to protect a rated opening in a fire wall or barrier, designed to close automatically on a signal or fusible-link release. Whether a given door is a fire door is established by a qualified person from labels and records.
Fusible link
A heat-responsive element in a fire door's release chain that separates at a set temperature and lets the door close. It is replaced, not repaired, and Ohio's adopted fire-code provisions call for prompt replacement when it has operated or been damaged.
Drop test
The functional test of a rolling fire door's automatic closing, performed and documented as part of the annual inspection and testing that Ohio's adopted provisions require. It is performed by qualified personnel; this site does not describe the procedure.
High-speed door
A fabric or rigid door built for very frequent cycling, usually with a motor, brake, controller, and sensing devices. Found at interior traffic openings and at freezer and cooler entrances.
Breakaway curtain
A high-speed door curtain designed to release from its guides when struck instead of tearing. Getting it back in service is model-specific work, which is why the guides say not to improvise a reset.
Jackshaft, trolley, and hoist operators
Three styles of commercial door operator. A jackshaft operator mounts beside the door and turns the shaft, a trolley operator pulls the door along a rail under the ceiling, and a hoist operator adds a chain for manual operation. The type affects both diagnosis and parts.
Photo eye
A paired sensor across the opening that reverses or stops a powered door when the beam is broken. Repeated reversing is a symptom a facility reports; the provider assesses alignment, wiring, and controls.
Safety edge
A sensing strip along the bottom of a powered door that reverses it on contact. Like photo eyes, it is a safety device the provider assesses rather than something to bypass.
Lockout/tagout
The hazardous-energy control practice governed by 29 CFR 1910.147 — isolating power, securing stored energy, and tagging equipment before servicing. It is carried out by trained, authorized personnel following the applicable instructions and the facility's procedures.
Certificate of insurance
A document an insurer issues summarizing a contractor's coverage. Facilities that require one from vendors should ask the provider for it before scheduling; this site does not hold or verify any provider's certificate.
Vendor onboarding
The facility's own process for approving a new contractor — insurance, safety paperwork, site access, purchase-order setup. Knowing your requirements before the call shortens the time between assessment and work.

How to use these before you call

Start with the equipment. Walk to the position, read the data tag, and match what you see to the terms above — leveler or plate, sectional or rolling, seal or shelter, restraint or lights. A call that opens with "a hydraulic leveler, lip won't extend, tag says this model" is answered faster than one that opens with "the dock is broken."

Then check which rules the request touches. A dock board question runs through 29 CFR 1910.26; a restraint that will not release runs through STD 01-11-007 and your facility's own procedures; a rolling door in a rated wall runs through Ohio's adopted fire-code provisions. Knowing which rule applies tells you what documentation to ask the provider for.

Finally, know your jurisdiction. Replacement scope may need a permit, and the office depends on the address — Cincinnati proper, unincorporated Hamilton County, Kentucky, or Indiana. The homepage's permit section walks through the screening questions; the issuing office makes the determination.
